The State of Espírito Santo, proportionally, has the largest number of Protestants in the country, with more than 1.5 million people, which corresponds today to more than 37.5% of the population. In Brazil, 86.8% of the population declared themselves Christian, out of a total population of about 200 million people (data from the 2010 Census conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics - IBGE).

Brazil experiences deep inequality and struggles to overcome poverty. In 2017, 54.8 million people lived in poverty, some 26.5% of the country’s total population. After years of public policies designed to reduce poverty, recently the population living in extreme poverty increased to 15.3 million. In 2017, 7.4% of Brazilians lived below the extreme poverty line. Of those living in extreme poverty, the majority were black (75%).

The State of Espírito Santo has 9,160 indigenous people from two different ethnic groups: Tupiniquim and Guarani. The Guaranis, who came from the south of the country in the 60s, maintain their characteristics : language, religion, crafts and their cultural manifestations. The Tupiniquins, who are remnants of the municipality of Aracruz, due to contact with the white man, lost some of their characteristics, but they maintained their cultural references.
UNIDA has periodically made visits with groups of students to the Tekoá Mirim village led by the caciques Peru and Karai Mirim and eventually given financial support for some of their needs.
